Surgery
The goal of burn
surgery is to restore as much function as possible to damaged
limbs and to reduce the appearance of scars through various
surgical techniques.
Burn surgery involves
both the acute care of the burnt patient as well as their
long-term reconstructive rehabilitation.
Immediate (acute)
surgical care of the burnt patient focuses on release of swollen,
tense tissues (fasciotomy), excision of burnt necrotic (dead)
tissue (escharotomy) and resurfacing with skin grafts. Reconstructive
surgery on the burnt patient focuses on release of burn scar
contractures (limbs), resurfacing of hypertrophic/ keloid
scars and reshaping of damaged skin.
